Mayito Rivera & Sons of Cuba

Award-winning singer/composer with a breathtaking band

As the lead singer of Los Van Van, Cuba’s most successful band, he became famous all over the world and played a major role in shaping their distinctive sound. He wrote countless Cuban hits and became an idol for an entire generation. Together with Los Van Van, he won numerous awards, including the Latin Grammy for “Best Salsa Album of the Year.”

He also appeared on the big screen: in Wim Wenders’ film Musica Cubana – The Sons of Buena Vista, Mayito played one of the leading roles.
The international music scene reveres him as the “Poet of the Rumba”, and he is regularly invited to share the stage with greats such as Oscar d’León, Gilberto Santa Rosa, and Isaac Delgado.

Since 2011, he has successfully pursued his solo career, founding the group Sons of Cuba. With this outstanding band, the virtuosity of top-class musicians from Havana meets powerful arrangements that blend Salsa, Rumba, Afro, and Timba with fresh Jazz and Funk elements. It’s no surprise that their debut album, Negrito Bailador, was nominated for a Grammy.

Now, there is an exciting new development within this remarkable band: two of his sons have joined the lineup. With Mayito Rivera Carrasco on piano and Mathis Rivera Carrasco on trumpet, the band gains not only two highly trained graduates of Havana’s music conservatories but also two undeniably gifted musicians whose father’s legacy is unmistakable.

Thus, the name “Mayito Rivera & Sons of Cuba” has now taken on its literal meaning—a band that carries the extraordinary power of Cuban musicians from the heart of Cuba out into the world. At the highest level, audiences experience a captivating ensemble led by a frontman who electrifies them with his stage presence, energy, and incomparable voice.
